History of the Department

The people of Garhbeta and the adjoining area, mostly poor and illiterate, strongly failed the necessity of kindling light of learning in the remote backward area of Paschim Midnapore and adjoining Bankura and Hooghly district and founded the Garhbeta College with their modest means on the 13th August 1948. Since then the Sanskrit department has been started by offering Sanskrit as a pass subject for B. A. general students. The department was first affiliated to Calcutta University, and subsequently affiliated to Vidyasagar University in 1985. Department has introduce honours in Sanskrit from the session 2008-2009.

The department of Sanskrit is located in the Rabindra Bhawan of the college campus. The department has been enriched by the eminent professor Dr. Bachaspati Tripathi from the beginning of the college. He fully dedicated himself for the development of the department. Since the retirement of Dr. Tripathi, the full time post still remains vacant. At present Professor. Baneswar Jana, Assistant professor in Sanskrit has been joined as HOD since 25th January 2017 by the college authority, and for government approved part time teachers named Dr. Chandan Mandal, Mr Apurba Kusari, Mr Nilimesh Mahata, Dr. Shyamal Goswami and one gust teacher named Mr. Goutam Mitra are serving the department with their utmost excellence. According to further government policy all govt. Approved part time teachers and Guest teachers are designated as State Aided College teacher from 1st January 2020.

In the running session (2020-2021) total number of student in our department is 125 in core course and 1030 in general course as per CBCS system.

Most of the students of our department come from financially backward classes and as well as they are first generation learner. That’s why are given extra care through tutorial classes to prepare their studies by the faculties with follow the class routine as well as out of the routine, but all measures in formally taken by the faculty that’s why records are not been kept in the department. Apart from this ST/SC and OBC students and economically backward students avail the facilities to attained coaching classes from the UGC sponsored remedial coaching centre in the college. Students are always getting counselling regarding their higher studies as well as on the personal matters. In this manner the department has been able to inculcate the moral and social values of the departmental students. It also enhances reasoning abilities and rational capabilities as well as inculcates spiritual inspiration of the students.
