History of the Department
The people of Garhbeta and the adjoining area, mostly poor and illiterate, strongly felt the necessity of kindling light of learning in the remote backward area of Paschim Medinipore and adjoining Bankura and Hoogly Districts and founded the Garhbeta College with their modest means on the 13th August 1948 under the Calcutta University and subsequently was affiliated to Vidyasagar University in 1985. Since the inception of the College, Philosophy Department has been started by offering Philosophy subject as a pass subject for B.A (General) students. Honours Course in this department has been introduced in the year 2001.
All building in our college are named with different eminent personalities by the college authority e.g. “Nazrul Bhaban”, “Rabindra Bhaban”, “Radhakrishna Bhaban” etc. Hence, the Philosophy Departmental room is located in the ground floor of the “Radhakrishna Bhaban”. And the “Radhakrishna Bhaban” is situated beside the “Charak Uddan” (Garden of Department of Botany) It is the eastern side of the College.
The Department has been enriched many learned teaching hands from the beginning of the Department. They were Prof. Satya Pal, Prof. Sanjib Ghosh, Prof. Sunil Srakar & Prof. Tarapada Ghosh. They have to be remembered for their dedication for the development of the Department. At present two whole time Associate Professor, one State Aided college Teacher and three Invited teachers from other colleges. They are attached as a state aided college teacher another college. Numbers of Six teachers are serving in this department with their utmost capacity. Mr. Sankar Adak is Associate Professor and in-charge of the department and is conventionally called Head of the Department. He has done UGC sponsored MRP. Miss Soma Samanta has done UGC sponsored MRP.
Faculty members are trying their best to put up with the impact of the department and carrying on the mission of the Philosophy department of the Garhbeta i.e. enhancement of proper knowledge and aspiration by which students would be able to make them all round personality of every aspect in the society.
In the current session 2020-2021 there are 104 students in Honours Course and 1055 students are in General courses is prosecuting their studies. At present the student’s strengths decreasing due to the introduction of the Philosophy Honours Course in the nearby colleges within 10 to 12 km distance from the Garhbeta College.
As the method of the teaching, teachers generally delivered their lectures in the class room, but during the period of Covid-19 our college arranges the class online mode via Google meet platform. Organize group discussion the relevant topics among students as well as give the home assignments to the students. Since the college is situated in the backward area, so most of the students come from financially backward class and as well as they are first generation learner. That’s why they are given extra priority to prepare their studies by the faculties. In this respect special tutorial classes are arranged by the faculty members to cover up the back log studies. Teachers are very friendly with the students. Departmental teachers conduct internal assessment as per university academic calendar. After examining the answer scripts students are always allowed to see the answer scripts and teachers always counsel them regarding the enhancement of their writing skill and motivate the give to the point answer.
Although department has no departmental library but the college central library become enriched with sufficient text books and reference books as per students requirements. Students can borrower the books as per their requisition from central library. Apart from this faculty members help their students with their personal books as and while required.
Departmental students are informally always getting counseling regarding their higher education as well as to solve their personal problem. They are also informally given information regarding service recruitment boards and their respective advertisements from the faculty members as well as from the employment cell of the college. SC, ST students are given for school teaching conducted by West Bengal School Service Commission from UGC sponsored entry in service in the college campus. Furthermore, the department always tries to inculcate the social and moral values of the departmental students. It also enhances reasoning abilities and rational capabilities of the students.
We are always committed to the students for enrich their knowledge. For this reason our department has been organize two seminars. One day International seminar --- this was arranged on 17.03.2017. Another two days National Webinar that was arranged on 26.08.2020 & 27.08.2020.
It gives immense pleasure to announces that some pass out Honours Graduate are presently serving in police department, public administrative service etc. many students has been joined as an Assistant Teacher through West Bengal School Service Commission and many students has been qualified National Eligibility Test (NET)/ State Eligibility Test (SET) and many students has been engaged as State Aided College Teacher’s throughout West Bengal. We are proud for the three faculty members; we got in this current session as they are our department’s ex- students and are side by side State Aided College Teacher’s another college.
